What is Colonic Hydrotherapy?

Also known as Colonic Irrigation, Colonics or Colon Therapy, Colonic Hydrotherapy is a warm internal bath that helps cleanse the colon of poisons, gas, accumulated faecal matter and mucus deposits. Such techniques were first recorded in 1500 B.C. in China, Egypt and India, and have been used in traditional, Ayurvedic and Naturopathic medicine since that time. The treatments available today have evolved from those used in 19th century European spas and have been brought up to date and require thorough training and rigorous hygiene standards. Colonics are now a widely accepted alternative therapy for general well-being, as well as colon health.

Why Colonic Hydrotherapy?

Poor elimination can lead to many chronic conditions such as: constipation, diarrhoea, mucous, colitis, spastic colon, diverticulitis, IBS, candida, liver sluggishness, halitosis (bad breath), headaches, flatulence, haemorrhoids, skin problems, abdominal bloating, ME, allergies, fatigue - many "Psychological" states such as depression, lethargy etc. It is also of benefit prior to and following barium enemas or other similar medical investigations and during therapeutic fasting. Some complex conditions are contraindicated so a thorough, and confidential, medical history will be taken initially.

What is involved?

Conducted by a trained therapist (using sterile single use equipment) filtered water at a carefully regulated temperature is introduced under gentle gravitational pressure through the rectum into the colon using a small tube (speculum). A combination of special abdominal massage techniques, stimulation of acupressure points and water begins to soften and cleanse the colon of faecal matter, gas and old deposits which are piped away with the waste water. The therapist works progressively around the structure of the colon allowing water alternately to flow in and release. The full length of the colon is cleansed during a colonic whereas an enema can only influence the lower part of the colon. The cleansing effect of one colonic is equal to about 15-20 enemas. In the 30 to 45 minutes it takes to complete the procedure, the colon will have been flushed a number of times and the body will have gently eliminated toxins and waste material equalling 20 to 30 bowel movements. Colonics can safely be performed without fear that the body will become reliant upon them for elimination. Actually, colonic hydrotherapy improves the natural function of the colon by strengthening the muscles which promote peristalsis (the muscular contractions that move waste material through the bowel) so it is not habit forming. It also removes tough plaque which can coat the inside of the colon and reduce peristalsis and absorption of nutrients and leave the colon stretched or misshapen. During the session dietary advice and nutritional supplements may be discussed so the client can have the information and support they need to build on the treatment and move towards maintaining a healthy and comfortable colon and managing any symptoms.

Is it safe ?

Colonic Hydrotherapy is safe when carried out by a registered Nurse and experienced Colonic Therapist, who is insured, and appropriately qualified by a recognised college. The Association and Register of Colon Hydrotherapists maintain very high standards of qualification for registered therapists. The treatment is carried out at premises which are routinely inspected and meet strict hygiene standards. At all times the client's comfort and modesty are respected and treatment is only carried out with informed consent and all information shared is held in confidence. Countless thousands of colonics have been given safely; the water pressure is very low, so there is no danger of bowel perforation and the water used is thoroughly filtered. Colonic Hydrotherapy is not habit forming, nor does it disturb the electrolyte balance.

How will I feel after a treatment?

Most people quickly experience improved mental clarity after colonic irrigation. With their toxic load diminished and elimination improved, a greater feeling of well-being and lightness is felt. There is usually improvement in the presenting symptoms such as bloating and constipation, toxic headaches, painful heamorrhoids and skin problems after 2 treatments. Some chronic symptoms will require a longer course of treatment. Essentially anyone with a condition aggravated or caused totally or in part by autotoxicity, will notice that the resulting improved elimination aids healing. In the longer term, bowel disease risk is also diminished and nutrients are better absorbed leading to improved all-round health.
